As the developers stated in an interview, Mortal Kombat Trilogy is not a full-fledged plot part of the series and is a plotless collection. However, some parts of the Mortal Kombat Trilogy storyline have entered the canon of the series, such as the story of the Chameleon character and the change in history, according to which the tournament in MK2 served as a distraction for the Earth Fighters during the resurrection of Queen Sindel.

All other parts of the plot, such as some biographies and endings, as well as the appearance of Goro and Kintaro, are not canon.

Game innovations

Every character that appeared in the games of the series prior to Mortal Kombat Trilogy is present in this game. In addition to the characters from Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, the MKT adds Raiden and Baraka, as they appeared in Mortal Kombat 2. Both characters have one new special move and new run and fall sprites. A new version of Johnny Cage was presented, played by the new actor. Cage has all the MK2 special moves except for the groin kick, because the MK3 / UMK3 characters did not have sprites to react to this move. The bosses Motaro and Shao Kahn were playable right from the start.

Other innovations

  • Mortal Kombat Trilogy introduces an "AGRESSOR" bar that fills up during a battle between two fighters. When this bar fills completely, the character becomes much faster and stronger for a short period of time.
  • This game introduced the finishing move known as Brutality, which originally appeared in the home versions of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 on Mega Drive / Genesis and the SNES. To perform this finishing move, the player must collect a combo of eleven hits, which ends with a character uppercut and an opponent's explosion.
  • Many characters in Mortal Kombat Trilogy have received new special moves and finishing moves. Several characters have received techniques that were not used in previous games. These special moves include spinning with Kano blades (MK1 version), Kung Lao air torpedo (MK2 version), Goro's spinning strike, Baraka's spinning blades. In addition, Shao Kahn was thrown and grabbed with a blow, and Motaro was thrown over the head.
  • A bug in Jade's ending ("Komabt", which was in the arcade version of UMK3) has been fixed.
  • In the PlayStation 1 version, there is an option that allows you to download data for two characters while playing as Shang Tsung, thanks to which it was possible to solve the problem of loading during the transformation.
  • Shang Tsung never spawns in the fighter columns on the Choose Your Destiny screen. This is probably done in order to avoid long download times. The only time Shang Tsung can be seen under computer control is during the demo at the beginning of the game.
